Honoring Madoc’s love of the great outdoors

The Madoc Benfell Memorial Trust was born from loss and grief. Our beloved son, Madoc, passed away on 26th March 2021 - aged 13 years.

Nestled amongst nature, adventuring in the great outdoors, was Madoc’s happy place

From swimming in frigid waters while tramping through the Ōrongorongo Valley to blazing the mountain bike trails of Makara Peak & Spicer Forest; competing in Wellington’s Tough Guy / Gal Challenge to testing his limits at the Hillary Outdoor Education Centre Tongariro; running a marathon to fundraise for his school to his long-standing commitment to his treasured karate practice - these adventures name but a few of Madoc’s magic moments.

Madoc simply came alive when he was moving. No hesitation & certainly no fear. His enthusiasm so infectious, it would never take long for family & friends to join in his joy.

No other human on earth will ever replicate his humour, warmth, kindness, humble nature & his enthusiasm for a good adventure.

It’s this legacy - Madoc’s legacy - we will honour & carry on. From our deep sadness, let us infuse hope in the young people across Wellington

Our hope is that this Trust will be a physical reminder to make life spectacular for our young people. To let the lessons of nature & outdoor experiences build their confidence, grow their resilience & help them discover how wildly capable they are. And to support them to keep going, against all odds.

We know no better place than the great outdoors to show them the way.

Let our young people discover how wildly capable they are

Our Wildly Capable snap-band leather bracelets are a simple, yet powerful, daily reminder to adventure alongside you, your best friend, your loved ones & your students - always.
